Now meet the factory vegetable. Grown in their millions in trays of nutrient-enriched water inside a heated, artificially-lit greenhouse large enough to house ten football pitches, they are as far as you can get from ‘natural’ home-grown food. But this week, workers are putting the finishing touches to Britain’s largest hydroponic greenhouse – an astonishing construction in white steel and glass. By the time the site is complete in , another six massive greenhouses will have been constructed, providing a home to more than 1. Kent is often called the Garden of England. When this village of glass is complete, it will be more like England’s factory. At a time when people are increasingly concerned about industrial-scale farming, this latest, monumental step in the steady, insidious creep of factory farming is a controversial one.

The sea defence diaries – volunteer No 43 Yesterday I became a card carrying member of Friends of the Margate Museum no 43 and along with my renewal as a ten year member of the Margate Historical Society and my life membership of the Margate Civic Society. I think it goes without saying that I am taking the Margate Heritage Renaissance seriously. Last night the friends group of the Museum met and there were many issues raised mostly Museum issues and TDC issues of which everything I must say was very positive.
The sunbeam collection held by the Museum will soon be part of a new national archive of sea side photography and this is going to be a Christchurch university project.

Geography[ edit ] Boats on the River Stour at Sandwich There is Monk’s Wall nature reserve and a bird observatory at Sandwich Bay , which provides a home for wild duck and other wildlife in a wetland habitat. The reserve was opened by celebrity bird-watcher Bill Oddie in May Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust proposed the design and a management plan, including modifications to ditches and control of water levels to create ecological conditions that attract wetland species of plants, animals and birds.
Historically the land was reclaimed from the river and sea by the monks of Sandwich, and the northern boundary is still the old Monks’ wall of the 13th century. In the floods the sea covered the whole area around Sandwich and after these fields were drained a new river bank was created and the land ploughed for arable farming, with heavy use of fertiliser.

Tuesday, 21 April Thanet, Tanit and the Phoenicians: Recent work suggests that the name of the easternmost part of Kent, the Isle of Thanet, is one that is of considerable potential interest, being indicative of a major pre-Roman trading settlement founded by Phoenician merchants from Cadiz and Carthage. The following post offers some details and thoughts on this intriguing possibility.
Although no longer an island, Thanet was one right through to the end of the medieval period until the Wantsum Channel finally silted up and its name is recorded in a variety of sources from the second century AD onwards. Early and significant forms of the name include Ptolemy’s Tonatis c.

Like most of the medieval churches in Thanet, St Laurence was founded as a chapel of ease to Minster Abbey. The church was probably founded shortly before the Norman Conquest, around , making it the oldest building in Thanet apart from the Abbey itself. The earliest parts of the church are built of Caen stone, favoured by Norman masons. Late additions are in local flint. The original church was quite simple, consisting of just a nave and tower, but this expanded in the 12th and 13th centuries to include a chancel and side aisles.
In the tower was struck by lightning and had to be rebuilt. Curiously, the townsfolk raised the tower, making it even likely to be hit by lightning, but thankfully nothing so unsettling occurred! The interior architecture is a mix of Norman, Early English and Victorian style. The nave arcade has Norman arches around the central tower, supported on large Norman pillars.
Some of the capitals are carved with small devil’s heads. A Medieval Murder One of more peculiar stories associated with St Laurence is the strange tale of the Sprakeling family. Adam Sprakeling murdered his wife, and she was buried in the chancel under a tablet.
